What kind of film is No Exit?

LT Site

Written at the end of 1943, No Exit is a play by Jean-Paul Sartre composed in a single act.

Five people embracing, looking at a bright light.

It was first performed in 1944, in Paris.

theatrical
genre of No Exit is a favorite of many readers, but the one presented by the author of this work is quite unique, as it breaks away from the codes previously imposed.

But every era has its rebellion!

The theatrical genre, the genre of No Exit

The unique characteristic of the theatrical genre lies in the fact that the author expresses himself solely through the words of his characters. He therefore cannot intervene directly in the dialogue… There are, of course, exceptions, and many works prove the contrary, but only the characters are supposed to be the keepers of this secret…

The descriptions of each of the characters can be done through what are called stage directions but also through clues that can be given to us in certain dialogues; we therefore have information about the character or the physical appearance.

It is important for the playwright to take into account the rules imposed by the theatrical genre but also the text's intended purpose of being performed!

The most distinctive feature of Jean-Paul Sartre's text is that it belongs to a very specific movement: existentialism. A major movement of its time, the 20th century, it confronts the viewer and the reader with the major issues of their era.

The genre of No Exit, and especially the literary movement that this work represents, places the human being face to face with his demons, his questions, his doubts, his flaws… The actor then becomes the incarnation of an evil that must be analyzed, questioned, understood.

To give you an idea, know that the author, in his most famous play, features three characters who suffer the judgment of others after their death; they suffer hell.

Remember: “Hell is other people.” But who are these “other people” really?

genre so popular?

No Exit
genre is highly appreciated because it allows humans to discover themselves, to confront themselves and others , in laughter as well as in tears.

It offers a moment of self-transcendence; it's an outlet, a disinhibitor!

Indeed, the theatrical genre is a literary genre that allows us to speak to all spectators, of all ages and backgrounds. This is precisely why, after fables and poems, it has become the essential means of storytelling and also of exposition.

Although Jean-Paul Sartre's play leans towards a style considered rather dramatic, it should not be forgotten that originally, the author wanted to make it a funny text…
