The Avignon Off Festival: an alternative festival of theatre and live performance

Whether you're a lover, a casual attendee, or a passionate fan of live performance, we invite you to discover the Avignon Off Festival. It's a true communion of ages, cultures, and colors. This year, our theater is among the many exceptional venues in Avignon that will host at least one show.


What is the Avignon Off Festival?

The Avignon Off Festival was created in 1966 under the direction of André Benedetto, a French poet, author, and theater director. Since then, with each edition, this arts and culture event has continued to attract ever-growing crowds. It is considered one of the greatest festivals for live performance. It emerged following the Avignon Festival, created a little earlier in 1947 by Jean-Louis Côme Vilar, a French author, actor, and director.


To live up to its reputation, the Avignon Off Festival welcomes numerous artists from around the world each year. You can enjoy plays, music, readings, dance performances, and much more. This unique festival boasts no fewer than 1,000 performances. This year, Avignon will have exclusive rights to certain shows, as they will be performed there for the very first time.

What are the dates for the 2022 Avignon Off Festival?


This year marks the 56th edition of the Avignon Off Festival . It is scheduled to take place from July 7th to 30th, 2022. As always, the Off Festival is an unmissable summer event. The audience attending the various performances remains very diverse and is constantly evolving. These theater lovers are sure to find something to enjoy, whatever their preferences. Since June, a subscription card has been available, offering discounts on shows and many other benefits.


Where does the Avignon Off Festival take place?


During this festival, the entire city of Avignon pulsates to the sounds of various theatrical performances. The Off Village, located on Rue Pourquery de Boisserin, offers a multitude of activities, conferences, and exhibitions. It is truly a temple dedicated to the Off Festival. The festivities begin on July 6th. From then on, various venues have been selected to host the festival's diverse events. These include La Scala Provence, the Templar Chapel, and, of course, our own theater, the Laurette Theater in Avignon.
