What is the importance of the Avignon Festival?

Have you ever come across the name Jean Vilar? Because he's a major figure in the history of the Avignon Festival ...

The origin of the Avignon Festival

No, this cultural event has absolutely nothing to do with the Pont d'Avignon... except that they take place in the same city. In fact, the Avignon Festival, in which our beloved Laurette Théâtre participates, was founded not so long ago, in 1947. Its founder was none other than Jean Vilar, the French actor, theatre director, film actor, stage director, and playwright, who died in 1971. What can be considered one of his greatest works is today one of the most important international events in contemporary performing arts!

Every year, the Avignon Festival takes over the entire city, transforming its architectural heritage into various performance venues. Avignon welcomes more than ten thousand visitors, all with the same goal: to experience a show.

What are the schedules?

Transformed into a majestic stage, the city of Avignon is a place where, for a month, all festival-goers have access to a diverse, vibrant, and contemporary culture. They can see performances, films, exhibitions, listen to readings or debates... It's a gateway to a whole host of artistic and intellectual worlds. The Avignon Festival's importance stems from the fact that this venue fosters all kinds of creative and transformative experiences for both artists and audiences. One last thing: thanks to and since Jean Vilar, the director enjoys complete freedom in choosing the program.
