Avignon has become the symbol of artistic creation. Taking over the Cour d'Honneur of the Palais des Papes, the cloisters, and even the courtyards of high schools, the Avignon Festival sets the hearts of live performance enthusiasts and those eager for theatrical discoveries racing. For three weeks, often demanding performances, discussions, and debates enliven every conversation among Avignon's residents. The first Avignon Festival took place in 1947. It was with a group of friends, poets, and theater lovers that Jean Vilar created the Avignon International Theater Festival. The artist envisioned an event dedicated to contemporary creation: each year, he offers us performances from around the world, interpreted by renowned artists as well as emerging directors. Each edition has its own theme, on which many of the performances are based or inspired.

In 2019, French director David Bobée brought his vision of the city to life with a unique festival celebrating the poetry of cities around the world: Avant-Gardes Cities! At this festival, we celebrated creative energy and poetic visions through theatrical performances and musical encounters in over 60 venues in downtown Avignon...
