About the show:
Garcin, Inès, and Estelle have been brought together in an unusual place for a reason unknown to them... Very quickly, they discover that each of them is to become the executioner of the other two... "Hell is other people."
Others may try to objectify me, but they cannot steal my freedom. No Exit is central to Sartrean existentialism. Once a person has chosen their actions, there is no going back. Sartre pushes this idea to its extreme: contemplating one's past life and one's absence from Earth is a form of torture for our characters... Sartre wrote this one-act play, which he initially titled The Others, in fifteen days in 1943.
However, to consider No Exit a pessimistic play would be a mistake. No Exit is a farce with metaphysical undertones, and it owes its enduring, paradoxical nature to being one of the greatest successes of contemporary French theater, both in France and abroad. Human beings should be able to live with the consequences of their choices for eternity. No Exit thus invites us to give meaning to our lives rather than simply enduring them. "We always die too soon—or too late. And yet life is there, over; the line is drawn, we must take stock. You are nothing other than your life.".
